Sailung in the local language means a large hill with a 100 hillocks. In one hillock is a large rock that resembles from afar a tiger jumping in the air. Also in area is the famous Sailung cave. The local tribe people believed this was the home of their protecting God Sailung. The villagers and the Jhankris (witch-doctors) gather at the cave in numbers on two special days, the full moons of August and January, to make the God Sailung happy with their offerings and make requests.
Himalayan Vacation Treks and Expedition organizes treks to Sailing-Temal usually from November to February. The weather is cool and the air is clear in these months. The view of hills and Himalaya of Eastern Nepal including the Everest area are magnificent in the clear air. The 11 day trek through virgin forests, along rivers and streams, with waterfalls on the way, make this trek most pleasant. Also unique is the direct experience of the lifestyle of the peoples living in the area. The Temal Area is off the usual tourist route. This trek is a special offering of Himalayan Vacation Treks and Expedition for those who like authentic exposure to the cultures of Nepal. Those who have visited have found it touching and rewarding.
Himalayan Vacation Treks and Expedition staff consist of ethnic Tamang people. And because of this, Himalayan Vacation Treks is proud to offer Home Stays in the Temal Area. The Tamang people, who are in the majority, are Buddhist, though the area contains other Hindu ethnicities and cultures. HV Treks guests will spend the night in a villager’s house and will be welcomed to share meals with the family. The cost of this is far less than one would pay in a lodge.
