Dolpo, located in the Karnali province of western Nepal, is the largest district in the country and offers some of the most remote trekking routes. This less-explored region lies in the rain shadow of the Himalayan Mountain range, making it an intriguing destination for adventurous trekkers. A highlight of the Dolpo trek is the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake and the Shey Gompa, a Buddhist monastery renowned for its well-preserved Buddhist culture. Previously, access to these sites was limited to flights between Nepalgunj and Jhupal, but now land transportation is also available. Due to the unpredictable local weather, air travel can be unreliable, so hiring a jeep from Nepalgunj to Jhupal via Dunai is often a more dependable option.

The lifestyle of the Dolpo people bears a close resemblance to that of Tibetans. They rely on agriculture and animal husbandry, cultivating crops like buckwheat, barley, potatoes, and Uwa. Tsampa, a staple food in the region, is made from roasted barley and wheat. The landscape is dotted with herds of yaks, sheep, and Himalayan goats, which are raised for meat, milk, wool, and as beasts of burden. Traditional clothing is often hand-woven by local women.

In recent years, some tea houses have been built to provide food and lodging for trekkers. The crystal-clear waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake are a major attraction for visitors, offering breathtaking views. Inner Dolpo, or the northern parts of Dolpo, is situated near the Tibetan plateau, above the tree line. It is said that some locals have never seen trees, as they transport wood from lower Dolpo using yaks to construct their homes.
