For 17 years, Himalayan Vacation Treks and Expedition has been dedicated to offering guests an authentic experience of the Himalayas, backed by a team of guides with over a century of combined expertise. Founded by Palsang Tamang in July 2008, the organization embodies the collective efforts of the Tamang community in Thulo Parsel, a small Buddhist village in Nepal. Alongside the Sherpas, the Tamang people serve as primary guides for high mountain expeditions, and a portion of the company’s profits is allocated to social welfare initiatives benefiting the Tamang community.
What sets Himalayan Vacation Treks apart is its commitment to providing year-round salaries, trekking gear, and training for its staff, rather than hiring on an ad-hoc basis like many other trekking companies in Nepal. In addition to organizing treks in the Himalayas, the organization arranges tours, rafting trips, and jungle safaris across the country.
Palsang’s journey began in 1989 when he started as a porter in Dolpa at the age of 16. He swiftly progressed to become a trekking guide for Nepal, Tibet, and India. Born in 1972 in Kavre, Thulo Parsel, Palsang is the eldest of five siblings. After spending 16 years with the Dutch trekking company HT Wandelreizen, he launched his own venture. His extensive experience includes guiding treks in Tibet, Bhutan, and various regions of India. Palsang values shared experiences and cultural exchanges, encouraging his staff to forge meaningful connections with guests during treks.
From 2004 to 2012, Palsang volunteered as Nepal Representative for the NGO Sathsathai, focusing on education, sanitation, and health improvements in the Tamang Rural Municipality of Kavrepalanchok District. This initiative benefited 36,000 people by facilitating access to electricity, constructing toilets, establishing 63 libraries, promoting adult women’s education, improving cooking stoves, and providing microfinance options. Palsang played a key role as Public Relations Officer and social activist for the project and remains dedicated to its ongoing success. Himalayan Vacation Treks actively supports Sathsathai Bikash Nepal through donations and welcomes contributions from interested donors.
The company is a proud member of various associations, including TAAN (Trekking Agents Association of Nepal), NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association), NTB (Nepal Tourism Board), VITOF (Village Tourism Promotion Forum-Nepal), and KEEP (Kathmandu Environmental Education Project). Palsang served as an executive member of KEEP from September 2024 to September 2027, contributing to programs focused on eco-tourism, English language courses, wilderness first aid, and environmental awareness. He also served as an executive member of TAAN from September 2013 to October 2015.
Himalayan Vacation Treks is fully licensed and adheres to all government regulations, maintaining trekking emergency medical insurance through Nepal Insurance Company Limited, which covers guests during treks. With a skilled and experienced team, the organization is equipped to provide 24-hour emergency response for any incidents requiring attention or evacuation.
